The South Dade Community Choir was the idea of Homestead resident Sandy Keffer. Sandy and others she knew wanted to present the patriotic cantata “I Love America” to the community. The idea was approved by the Homestead Ministerial Association and word soon spread that a new choir was forming. It became known as the “I Love America” choir, and the concert was a big hit with the community in that summer of 1991.

Afterward, the members felt they wanted to stay together, so they became the South Dade Community Choir with Sandy as the director. They invited others to join them and they soon began to branch out with an expanded concert schedule. They became an outreach ministry of the First Presbyterian Church of Homestead. A beautiful logo was designed for the choir by Cindy Horne. Membership included teens to senior citizens, people of different nationalities, physically challenged folks... we found a way to accommodate a new wheelchair-bound member, and a young lady with a seeing-eye dog. Although blind, she participated in the rehearsals and listened to program tapes and learned the concert music right along with everyone else. Every member volunteers their time and talents to the choir. Some have been piano accompanists and other instrumentalists. Some have done the behind-the-scenes work of staging, lighting, and publicity. We all work together.

Purpose of the South Dade Community Choir

So that the community can see that Christians can and do have a great time serving our Lord and Savior and enjoy singing praises to and for our Lord.
To bring in new members to the choir.

Goals of the South Dade Community Choir

To present the message of Christ to the community, churches and civic organizations - and the world - through music and the Word of God.

WE HAVE A WONDERFUL LORD AND SAVIOR TO PRAISE AND TO SERVE -
AND TO BRING OTHERS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS SAVING GRACE AND LOVE

May God mold our hearts, voices, minds and talents together for His Glory!

As a member of the South Dade Community Choir, your voice can join with ours in concerts and outreach ministries at many South Dade locations, and your service project hours will add up quickly. Young or old, trained singer or beginner, all voices are welcome. We also feature instrumentalists, so if you play an instrument, now is your time to be presented to the community!

There is never an audition! Just come and join us at any Monday night rehearsal. Sit a few minutes...listen...you will hear the gladness of hearts, the joyful music of praise and worship and thankfulness. Joined together, we are one voice, one heart, one commitment to our goal...which is to present the message of Christ to the community, churches, and civic organizations in the South Dade area.

Our rehearsals are held at New Beginnings Christian Fellowship Church, 15300 Biscayne Dr., (288th Street, east of U.S. 1) Homestead, Monday evenings at 7:00pm. But you don’t have to join this church to join the Community Choir! Many of our members belong to other churches, and some might not belong to any church, it doesn’t matter. We ask only for your time and commitment each week to attend rehearsals and concerts. Usually only one or two music books are used during a season, at nominal cost.

Those of you with special talents can lend an extra helping of service...we have featured flute solos, a harmonica montage of music, Uncle Sam in full dress giving a patriotic presentation, seasonal readings, duets and trios, a solo presented along with special music, an Army Color Guard salute to the Flag, and many other specialties have been presented over the years. Come and join us ...show us what you can do, and how you can be SPECIAL in our service group, and at the same time gain those service hours you need..

It must be repeated... we are a serious group and we have a serious purpose. Join us at Monday night rehearsal, or contact Sandy Keffer for more information, at 305 248-1995. You’ll be getting those required service hours, and getting that uplifting feeling that comes from feeling great about what you’re doing - helping others.
